i've been getting choppy gameplay in FFXI since the recent small update (think the 12th june was it). i asked SE an they said my drivers (6.14) are "too new. reinstall version 5.13."
so, i did that. and the drivers went back to 6.14. gameplay didn't improve, and i punched my Edison fuzzy. i went to safe mode, uninstalled all drivers, and put 5.13 back in. Back in normal mode, 6.14 is back again, gameplay still choppy. even repeated, using a driver cleanup utility. same result.
anyone else havin this problem? mine's an ATI radeon 9800pro. this is driving me nuts, because i really wanna play, but this chop every 4 seconds is nasty. i really should have stuck with nVidia, eh? i'm really open to ideas on how to solve this.

Do you have automatic update enabled? If so disable it, this should stop windows from updating the drivers.

autoANYTHING from windows is disabled for me usually. mcaffee also blocks it through firewall. and the second time in safe mode i followed the driver cleaner's instructions (see how desperate i'm gettin?) and kept my network cable unplugged for the reboots. still kept using 6.14 files it pulled from somewhere.

I think we have the same card lev... I have the Catalyst 6.3 driver for my radeon 9800pro, and it works great.
Download the newest catalyst from ATI, then uninstall your video card driver, then install from the new download.

If you have to put the older drivers in, to stop windows from reverting to the drivers you had, the easiest thing to do is to rename the 'c:\windows\inf' to something like 'c:\windows\inf2', remake the inf folder and remove your drivers and reboot, windows will have no drivers to fall back on, and your video card will be listed as unknown, till you install any drivers you want to...
After that, copy any files that windows installed into the new inf folder, into your inf2 folder, then change then delete the new inf folder, and change the name of the inf2 folder back to inf, so that you can install other stuff later.

i can't put the newest catalyst in, ffxi support says thats whats screwin things up. but maybe i'll try the 6.3 catalyst package (the new ones i had that got unsupported were 6.5)

my next card will almost certainly be nVidia. maybe the 6800gt or somethin. this ATI an SE thing is really pissin me off. they change somethin to upgrade video performance/compatibility. good thing. so that means i have to downgrade my driver. of course. livkhfuvutlucalkgyiyhnhenryclay!
6.2 didn't work, maybe i should try an older Omega driver..
